Myotape (small, medium or large)
OverviewMyotape, developed by the internationally renowned breathing coach Patrick McKeown, combines mouth taping with the effects of kinesio taping. It therefore has a twofold effect: it stimulates nose breathing and strengthens the muscles around the mouth: the orbicularis oris muscle. The tape thus contributes to healthy growth and development of jaws and teeth.
During the day, a myotape can be stuck around the mouth for about half an hour to two hours. Preferably during activities where the mouth is normally open: while watching television, reading or gaming. By using the tape while sleeping, nasal breathing reduces the risk of snoring and sleep apnea (both effects of mouth breathing).
Tapes are available in three sizes:
- Small, for children aged 4 to 16 years (the opening in the center is 33 mm wide). The small myotapes are also available in a version in which the tapes are printed with fun animal heads such as a bear or frog.
- Medium, from 16 years and for adults with a small mouth (the opening in the center is 37 mm wide). This myotape is also available in a version for the sensitive skin.
- Large, for adults (the opening in the center is 40 mm wide). This myotape is also available in a version for the sensitive skin and a version for men with a beard or mustache.
One pack contains 90 ready-to-use tapes. Stretch the tape slightly when applying to the mouth (no more than 20%) and pat it gently onto the skin once applied. This video shows how the tape is applied. If you feel that the tape is sticking too firmly, you can first apply the tape to the back of your hand. The adhesive layer then becomes slightly less strong before it is applied around the mouth.
The price per pack is € 19.25 (same price for small, medium or large). When ordering 6 packs at the same time, the unit price becomes € 18.25 (your benefit: € 6). When ordering 12 packs at the same time, the unit price is € 16.75 (your benefit: € 30). Your order of 6 or 12 packs can consist of different tape sizes: small, medium and/or large. If you do not want to receive the standard small myotape with such a combination order, but the version with the animal prints, please indicate this in the comments field during checkout. You can do this also if you would like to receive a number of copies of the Myotape Sensitive, the Myotape Beard and/or the Myotape Sport instead of other myotape-versions. Let us know which version and how much of them you want to replace for the Myotape Sensitive (medium or large), the Myotape Beard and/or Myotape Sport.
The importance of nasal breathing
It is very important to breathe through the nose, because mouth breathing ultimately leads to malocclusion. To prevent this, it is important to change the breathing behavior: breathe with the mouth closed and with the tip of the tongue upwards, against 'the roof’ of the mouth. There are various techniques and tools to learn the correct tongue position (practice with orthodontic elastics and sticking myospots to the palate) or to automate (the Re-mind). The lips can also be closed with lip plasters (Omnifix, Fixomull or Micropore) or lip tape (Lip tape or Myotape), so that nose breathing becomes a habit. Kinesio tape (such as Cure Tape) is used to strengthen the muscles around the mouth and to prevent open mouth behavior (with the associated mouth breathing). Kinesio tape lifts the skin around the mouth, which affects the function of the underlying muscles. Myotape has a similar effect. The knot or bottle exercise also increases the strength of the lip and mouth muscles.
